Nutrition Nugget: What's In Your Cup?

Published on: 14th August, 2026

Nutrition Nugget! Bite-sized bonus episodes offer tips, tricks and approachable science. This week, Jenn is talking about what's in your cup, the mindset story that's been sitting with her all week. As Salad With a Side of Fries starts to celebrate its seventh anniversary, this week's Nutrition Nugget centers on a simple question a Buddhist monk once asked his students, one that Jenn says stopped her in her tracks the moment she heard it. It starts with a spilled cup of coffee and ends somewhere much deeper, touching on stress, community, and the parts of ourselves we don't always notice we're carrying until life gives us a bump. Jenn ties it back to two themes she returns to on the show, but this time with a twist that feels personal. So what is in your cup? And more importantly, what spills out when someone bumps into you? Jenn has thoughts that will likely change how you move through the rest of your week. Like what you're hearing? Be sure to check out the full-length episodes of new releases every Wednesday. Jenn Trepeck: [:

So I heard this story, [00:00:30] and it just made me pause. It gave me that [00:00:35] food for thought, and so I made a note of it, and I [00:00:40] think this week is the perfect time to share it, because if you're listening the day this goes [00:00:45] live, Salad with a Side of Fries podcast is officially seven years [00:00:50] old. Totally wild. I mean, when I started this seven years ago, I had no [00:00:55] idea that this is where we would be.

years, I have something very [:

Now, as the story goes, so [00:01:20] a Buddhist monk asked his students a question. He said, "If you're carrying [00:01:25] a cup of coffee and someone bumps into you, why did you spill the coffee?" [00:01:30] Each and every student said, "Because someone bumped into [00:01:35] me." He replied and just said, "No." He goes on, [00:01:40] "The reason you spilled the coffee is because that's what you were carrying in your cup.[00:01:45]

pilled water." Then he said, [:

So each and every day, pause and think to [00:02:15] yourself, 'What am I carrying in my cup today?'" And I think part of the [00:02:20] reason why this struck me is because we spent a lot of time on Salad with a Side of [00:02:25] Fries going through the nuts and bolts of health, wellness, [00:02:30] vitality, longevity, healthspan, and this week's episode, [00:02:35] sexspan.

gtime listener, you've heard [:

And so to me, this story fits right into that. [00:03:00] Stress is often what shakes us. I also think it [00:03:05] impacts what fills our cup. And then even still, what spills out [00:03:10] of our cup impacts community and connection. [00:03:15] And so it just left me wondering, like, what kind of a world would it be if more people [00:03:20] were like you?

arry love and compassion and [:

So mindset is [00:03:45] powerful. And my hope is that this story from [00:03:50] our Buddhist monk of what's in your cup helps you shift your [00:03:55] perspective and fill your cup with maybe a little bit more joy, more [00:04:00] peace, and more generosity today and every day this [00:04:05] seventh year of Salad with a Side of Fries and onward. So ask [00:04:10] yourself, I guess, what's in your cup today?

As always, friends, I'm your [:

You'll get this week's recipe for the roasted beet and fennel salad with walnut [00:05:05] breadcrumbs. I know, it's so delicious. Well, friends, that's it for [00:05:10] today's episode of Salad with a Side of Fries.

“My passion for nutrition and helping others stems from “kicking my food issues” with my own weight management saga.” ~ Jenn

I believe that the greatest accountability is paying it forward! That’s why I teach the nutrition education we are all supposed to know but no one ever taught us, along with the science behind food, fitness, and health.

After I graduated from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, I founded Better Life Now LLC while working full-time in hedge funds. In 2019, I took my practice from side-hustle to full-time self-employment and launched my podcast, Salad With a Side of Fries. On the show, we offer science-based tips and tricks for how to achieve wellness and weight loss for real life – because who wants a life without fries or dessert?!

Topics we tackle on the podcast include debunking fad diets, food myths, misinformation in marketing, bad science, and general nutrition. I encourage guests whose expertise is different from my own focus on weight management to bring their unique, fact-based perspectives to talk about subjects they are educated in and passionate about.

Due to my decade-long experience of working with clients, I have gained insight into the health and food industry and the how-tos of building a business.

Some specific health and wellness topics I can speak to include debunking fad diets, exposing the BS we are fed by the food and diet industry, how the people around us can positively and negatively impact our health journey, and shifting mindsets in order to overcome inappropriate barometers of success to instead achieve happy, healthy, and meaningful change.

On the subject of business, I can help you by teaching my critical pieces every entrepreneur should know, how to make your side-hustle into your full-time job, ways to sustainably achieve success without burning out, contemporary networking, and how to prioritize wellness while pursuing your projects.

When I find some free time, I’m typically working out at Physique57, discovering hidden gem restaurants in NYC, or traveling to spend time with friends and family.

I’d love to have an in-depth conversation with you, whether it’s leveling up in business or debunking food myths!
